Teaching

I offer instruction in violin technique, jazz violin improvisation and world music. My teaching style is focused and flexible, and I engage my students through a philosophy of "owning" ones learning. I accept students at any level of expertise from age of 12 through adult and professional, I accept younger students through school and institutional programs, such as Merit Music School.

People say:

"Steve Gibons is a wonderful teacher. My son, Daniel, is 17 years old and has been taking violin lessons for 13 years, and he has been learning from Steve for over 2 years. Steve has a wealth of knowledge of violin technique, music theory and a wide range of music styles (from Baroque to jazz) that always impresses me, and are all brought to bear at the appropriate time during the course of his teaching. His enthusiasm for music and for his students is always clear, and his lessons are both focused and flexible. Steve connects with and teaches Dan at multiple levels, from technical aspects (bowing) to creative (improvisation), to and he always finds just the right balance to keep Dan engaged and challenged. Steve has helped Dan stay involved with music, and helped make it one of the most rewarding things that he has done. I don't think I could find a better teacher for my son." --Terry U.

"His lessons are fun and challenging and give me the right amount of material to work on til our next meeting." --Jan S.

"...he has been extremely patient . He is funny, extremely knowledgeable and flexible." --Carole H.
